A mercury dispenser for electric discharge lamps consists of welding a small metallic member (16) in the form of a <<patch>>, to a portion of the surface of the cathode disintegration shield (10) and trapping a predetermined volume of mercury under the <<patch>>. A dimple (17) may be formed in the shield (10) or in the member (16). The shield (10) may be formed from a continuous strip which is dimpled at a predetermined pitch, the dimples filled with mercury and the <<patches>> (16) welded over the dimples. The strip can then be cut into discrete <<patched>> sections to be bent into shields and assembled with the cathode structure. The mercury is liberated from unter the <<patch>> by heating and vaporisation, the vapour pressure forcing the <<patch>> open.

Claims (5)

1. Mercury dispenser for mercury. in combination with a cathode disintegration screen containing two metal walls, molded and hermetically connected, forming a container for mercury or an intermetallic compound containing mercury, made with the possibility of depressurization when heated, the first of which is made as an external or internal wall of a closed cathode disintegration screen, and the second is made with a recess for the container, characterized in that, in order to simplify the design, the second wall is made and as a single integrated metal loop whose ends are joined by welding overlapped forming a closed cathodic 'disintegrative screen, and the second wall length at least five times greater than the first length of the wall which is made as a bent tab formed by two lateral notches of the second wall.

Mercury dispenser according to claim 1, characterized in that the cathode disintegration screen in the area adjacent to the junction of the ends of the second wall is formed by overlapping portions of this wall installed with a tangential gap, and the container for mercury or intermetallic compounds containing mercury is located on one of these sites.
